Fragrant juniper: distinctive features of the shrub

Juniper belongs to a species of evergreen plants, the Cypress family. In the "people" the name of the bush is nothing but heather. The plant has gained widespread acceptance among gardeners. This is not because juniper is easy to care for.

It also has medicinal properties, which are widely used in alternative medicine. Regardless of the type of juniper, most often the shrub is planted on the sunny side. It is a fairly thermophilic plant that does not tolerate excessive shading.

Only some plant species, for example, the common juniper, are able to develop in the shade without minimal "losses". The distance between bushes should be more than one meter. In some cases, the distance can be increased up to 2 meters. It is also worth noting that juniper feels great in peat soil, mixed with sand and sawdust.

Before planting a plant, the soil must be thoroughly "soaked" in water. Dig a trench, and water the hole for about two hours - the quality of the juniper's "engraftment" depends on this procedure. The depth of the hole should be two to three times the size of the root.

Note to gardeners:

  • juniper is a heat-loving plant;
  • it is better to plant a shrub in early spring;
  • before planting, the soil must be thoroughly fertilized with "iron-containing" microelements;
  • you need to water a young plant once a summer season. It is preferable to do watering in the evening;
  • young plantings of juniper need loosening

An evergreen plant, with proper planting and care, will quickly get along in a “new place”. Remember that our climatic conditions are quite "brutal". In winter, it is more expedient to "insulate" the shrub with a covering material.

Species diversity of evergreen shrub

Juniper is famous not only for its aromatic needles, but also for its wide species diversity. Thanks to the hard work of Mother Nature and domestic breeders, more and more new species of evergreen plant are being published.

Today, lovers of aromatic shrubs can enjoy large and dwarf junipers. It remains only to decide: which type of shrub should be planted on your site.

The main types of juniper:

  1. Gold Cone. The most common evergreen plant in the Cypress family. The shrub is quite thermophilic, although it can withstand severe frosts. Does not tolerate excessive soil moisture.
  2. Green Carpet. Most often, the creeping shrub is planted in rocky areas. The plant has a fluffy crown, adores increased moisture, and, unfortunately, does not tolerate the harsh Russian winter badly.
  3. Suecica. This shrub is distinguished by its rather strong and dense needles, it can reach up to 4 meters in height. It develops poorly in shaded areas, although it tolerates low temperatures well. It grows very slowly, if the gardener expects a quick result of his work, then it is better to refuse this type of juniper.
  4. Blaauw. A very colorful and incredibly attractive type of Chinese juniper. Reaches a height of 1.5-2 meters. Hardy, prefers peat soils. Photophilous, although minimal shading is allowed.
  5. Blue Chip. One of the best types of creeping juniper. Has a very bright "blue" coloring. The needles create a dense fan, due to which the shrub perfectly tolerates adverse weather conditions.
  6. Hetzii. Has a distinctive light blue needles. Be famous for its excellent aroma. It is enough to break off a couple of needles and rub them in your palms, as the aroma begins to smell fragrant throughout the room. Thermophilic, tolerates domestic climatic conditions perfectly.

Whichever type of juniper you choose, you need to remember: the right distance, the choice of soil and the care of the shrub. Evergreens will give your garden a refined and elegant look and will truly decorate your summer cottage!

Should you use juniper in your landscaping?

To the question: is it worth using juniper in landscape design, the answer will be unequivocal - it is worth it. The evergreen shrub is widely used by modern landscape designers to decorate parks and gardens.

Juniper trees look great in a single or group composition. They add a special charm to the design of alpine slides, rocky and heather gardens. An evergreen plant of the Cypress family will perfectly complement artificial reservoirs and bring its own slice of originality and "freshness" into the design.

Modern gardeners widely use common juniper for laying the so-called "live" path. This idea is perfectly implemented in areas where there are no restrictions on the area.

Juniper is an amazing and very sophisticated plant that has perfectly penetrated our climatic conditions. A wide variety of species, unpretentious care and the ability to use shrubs in landscape design, have made "fragrant needles" the number one choice among lovers of the Cypress family!
