The term calendula comes from the Latin calendae which means first day of the month. The meaning of the name by which this flower is indicated is to be attributed both to
the fact that its flowering takes place, in areas with a temperate climate, a little always, at any time of the year, and due to the fact that the flowers open in the morning and close again at sunset. Despite the beauty and delicate colors of the flowers, the marigold is in the language of flowers synonymous with suffering and pain. In Greek mythology the pain was precisely represented by a young man who carried with him a garland of marigolds.
