New turf formation
The dream of all garden lovers is to have a beautiful turf.
The phases that must be followed for the realization of the turf are many but all very important.
before proceeding with the realization of the turf it will be convenient to plant the plants and set up the irrigation system, if we are willing to do so.
this phase is of particular importance. One of the main problems in the construction of lawns is in fact represented by the onset of weeds. The importance of eliminating these herbs right from the start is fundamental, not only for the aesthetic aspect, but above all for a competitive factor that would be established between good and bad herbs, looking for water, light and salts. minerals and living space. To perform a weed control that has good results, you must first irrigate the weeds, so as to allow a vegetative restart. This is to give the possibility to the weeding, which will be distributed, to penetrate to the roots thus enhancing its effectiveness. It is preferable to use total herbicides (which eliminate all plants) with systemic action (which penetrate inside the plant). The most used ones are based on glyphosate salts, easily available on the market. We will pay particular attention to the distribution of the product, given that this could also cause the death of shrubs and plants mistakenly sprayed with herbicide.
after having worried about the unwanted plants, we move on to the formation of the seedbed. The soil structure is very important (we must keep in mind that the grass we are going to sow must remain there for several years). To determine if our soil has a good structural level we will have to check its drainage (we have a good structure when we reach a correct ratio between air and water present in the ground). One of the most used measures to improve the composition of the substrate consists in adding organic substance. If we use manure it is good to make sure it is sterilized, as it could otherwise contain weed seeds that could germinate and infest the lawn. Other remedies are mixing with sand or pumice stone to aid water drainage. After improving the structure we will provide mineral salts, to promote growth during the first few months. On the market there are many fertilizers for lawns that will have to be distributed at the rate of 40-60 grams per square meter. In choosing the fertilizer, favor those with a high potassium content that will facilitate seed germination. Prepare the soil by digging or milling. Then with the help of a rake level the ground evenly, trying to eliminate the various dunes and troughs in the ground. Roll with a very heavy roller to give a first settling to the ground and then, again with the help of the rake, perform the leveling operation again.
The turf: Sowing
once the soil is prepared and the type of seed best suited to our needs is chosen, we will first sow it vertically and then horizontally, paying particular attention to the uniformity of the distribution. The sowing must be carried out of 1 kilogram every 20-30 meters depending on the type and purity of the seed.
Once sown we will bury it slightly with the rake and we will pass with the roller. After sowing, the lawn will have to be irrigated, every day for a few minutes, thus avoiding the phenomenon of runoff and floating of the seed, which could cause heaps of seeds in some places and rarity in others. It will therefore be very important to keep the soil moist until the grass appears.
